Lara Nicholls (TC 1986) to host Lorne Sculpture Biennale 17 March - 2 April 2018

Curator of 19th century Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia and Trinity alumna, Lara Nicholls (TC 1986), is the curator for this year’s Lorne Sculpture Biennale, which opens this coming Saturday 17 March 2018.

Lara, who was born and grew up in Lorne, is excited to be the curator of the sixth iteration of the iconic sculpture festival, for what is her incoming Biennale.
 
The theme of the festival is Landfall, with 41 artists being asked to create a work that explores the ‘intersection between nature, art and humanity and to ask questions about our existence within a much larger ecology,’ says Lara.
 
John Kelly, whose exhibition Beyond Woop Woop was on display at Trinity in the second half of 2017, will feature at this year’s Biennale. John and curating producer Seol Park have created the first to be presented at the festival with the work being based off one of John’s Antarctic paintings.
 
Another project to be featured at this year’s Biennale is The living Stage (Lorne). Created by Tanja Beer and Ashlee Hughes in collaboration with the Lorne community, the installation is sponsored by the at the Melbourne School of Design, the University of Melbourne. The artwork is a recyclable, biodegradable, edible and biodiverse installation. In addition, to celebrating Lorne’s mixture of flora and fauna, The Living Stage will also double as a platform for hosting performances by local artists and musicians.
 
The Lorne Sculpture Biennale is a free public event held every two years.
 
On Friday 23 March – ­­­­­ Sunday 25 March 2018, there is a being held at the Biennale focusing on the importance of environmental conservation. Registrations will take place on Thursday 22 March at 4-8pm at the Lorne Bowls Club, 35 Mountjoy Parade, Lorne.
 
Lara will be in Lorne for the opening of the Biennale and for the conference.
